CAMDEN, Del. - The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office say a 16-year-old boy from Dover was arrested on Wednesday after he attempted to set fire to a girl and instead set fire to a house in Camden.
According to investigators, the house fire happened on April 8 at 7 p.m. in the 300 block of North Old Mill Road.
During the investigation of the house fire, which resulted in $5000 worth of damage, it was determined that the 16-year-old suspect attempted to set an 8-year-old girl on fire, police say.
Detectives say that the suspect was having a relationship with a female occupant of the home and was hiding in the home when the house fire was reported. According to authorities, the 8-year-old girl was confronted by the 16-year-old boy in a second floor bedroom at which time he held a lighter to the girl's clothing, attempting to set her on fire.
After she ran away, the boy then lit available combustibles inside a bedroom and through the items outside a window causing the outside of the home to catch fire. The fire was then discovered by the occupants on the first floor of the home and called 911.
Police say the girl did not sustain any injuries.
The Camden-Wyoming Fire Company say they responded to the call and found that the home owners had extinguished the fire themselves with only smoldering items remaining.
The Fire Marshal's Office charged the male juvenile with first-degree attempted arson, third-degree felony arson, nine counts of second-degree reckless endangering, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal trespassing.
The juvenile was arraigned at Kent County Family Court and committed to the Stevenson Juvenile Correction Facility on $39,000 bond.
