CAMBRIDGE, Md.- A Cambridge man was seriously burned Monday afternoon during a fire that destroyed an airplane hanger and barn located on his property.
The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office says the fire occurred at around 1:59 p.m. at a 40- by 60-foot two-story masonry block and wood airplane hanger and barn located on Ross Neck Road in Cambridge.
According to investigators, the fire was accidentally started while property owner Jonathan Titus was working on a tractor fuel line and ignitable vapors came into contact with a hot drop light. As a result, Titus suffered second-degree burns to his left leg and was transported to Dorchester General Hospital by Cambridge EMS where he was treated and released.
It took 60 firefighters from the Neck District, Lloyds, Cambridge, Church Creek, Madison, Secretary, East New Market, Trappe, and Oxford volunteer fire companies about an hour to get the blaze under control.
The fire caused an estimated $400,000 in damage to the structure and another $200,000 in damage to its contents.
