(Photo: WBOC)GEORGETOWN, Del. - The Georgetown Police Department say they have charged a 13-year-old boy after police and a bomb explosive unit found a bomb in the boy's bedroom in Georgetown on Friday.
According to authorities, police were contacted at 2 p.m. by the Delaware State Police School Resource officer from the Indian River School District in reference to some suspicious drawings by a 13-year-old student.
Investigators say the drawings depicted some type of possible explosive or incendiary devices. The 13-year-old was asked what these drawings were and said that they were some type of homemade napalm, police say. The juvenile also said that he had made a device and it was on his dresser at his home in Georgetown, police say.
Georgetown police along with the school resource officer responded to the home located in the 800 block of East Market Street. Detectives say police located an object in the home that appeared to be a possible explosive device.
For resident safety and officer safety, police backed out and contacted the Delaware State Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit and the Georgetown Fire Department. Upon the arrival of EOD, surrounding houses were evacuated and traffic was rerouted in a safe direction.
Authorities say EOD recovered the explosive device with their robot system. The device was removed from the home and taken to an open field in the rear of the residence. Police say a blast of water from the robot disarmed the device.
Police say a further search of the residence revealed other evidence that was consistent with the construction of an explosive device. According to investigators, this evidence was recovered and the residence was rendered safe.
The 13-year-old was charged with possession of a destructive device and multiple counts of first-degree reckless endangering.
The juvenile has not been arraigned at this time. The Georgetown Police were also assisted by the F.B.I. and the Department of Natural Resources Hazardous Materials Unit.
All evidence collected will be turned over the ATF lab for further analysis.
