DOVER, Del. (AP)- Gov. Jack Markell has proposed eliminating the state Department of Finance and consolidating its functions into other state agencies.
The governor said Monday that the move is part of his effort to make state government smaller and more efficient.
The recommendation to eliminate the finance department came from its own leader, finance secretary Gary Pfeiffer, a former DuPont Co. executive well versed in corporate downsizing.
Officials said Pfeiffer has resigned his cabinet post, and that deputy finance secretary Tom Cook will serve as acting secretary until lawmakers can formally pass legislation to accomplish the transition.
