Fire Strikes Md. Day Care Center

Posted:

BEL AIR, Md.- Authorities are investigating a one-alarm fire that destroyed a children's day care center in Bel Air late Thursday morning. There were no reported injuries.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office says the 11:38 a.m. fire occurred at the Celebree Learning Center located on the 1200 block of Agora Drive.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire from an automatic fire alarm called into the Harford County Emergency Operations Center. The fire brought approximately 40 firefighters from Bel Air, Aberdeen and Abingdon to the scene. The fire caused approximately $175,000 in damage to the one-story, 100-foot by 70-foot building and to the contents.

Investigators determined there were 15 staff members and 55 children ranging from 6-weeks old to 5 years of age in the building at the time of the blaze. They were all able to get out safely.

Deputy State Fire Marshals have determined the fire originated inside the bathroom of the center's kindergarten readiness room. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
