DELMAR, Del.- People are expressing strong feelings for a potential casino that could come to Delmar, Del.
The opinions were pretty split at a public hearing held Wednesday night. The Delmar, Del. Town Council asked the public to come to the fire department to voice their opinions. The room where the hearing was held was packed.
When the council asked the room for a vote on who was for the casino and who was against it, by a hand count, the numbers showed about 27 in favor, 25 opposed, and five undecided. There were also five write-in votes, all opposed.
One woman who attended the hearing said she was in favor of the casino. She said, "We're in an economy right now where we need to do something to stimulate the economy. This is going to bring in a lot of jobs.
Others said they were against a casino. One woman said, "What we don't need is a casino. I want my nice, small, homey town and I want it without a casino."
Prior to the hearing, people who spoke with WBOC had varied opinions about the proposed casino.
One woman said, "Well, there's one in Harrington. I think it would bring people from Salisbury and to each his own, and it doesn't bother or affect me."
One man said, "I'm just worried about the drinking and driving that's going to come with it and the gambling. There's enough habit forming around here now. If they do want to gamble they can go to Dover Downs."
Developers say the casino would be located in Delmar, Del. on Route 13 across from the Delaware Motorsports Complex. The proposed site is located a mile north of the Maryland-Delaware state line. Developers say the plan includes slots, restaurants, and a place to host car shows. Any new casino would need state approval.
One developer says this project could cost anywhere from $100-300 million and it would add an estimated 1,000 jobs to the area.
