ELSMERE, Del.- New Castle County police have arrested a Maryland man accused of intentionally ramming a man with his car during an argument and then fleeing the scene.
Police say that on Monday at around 9 p.m., officers responded to the area of Kirkwood Highway and Farrand Drive for a report of two vehicles that were chasing each other in a reckless manner. One of the drivers called 911 and reported he was being threatened by the driver of a car that was following him.
The officers stopped the cars and discovered the driver of a black Chevrolet Cavalier was being chased by another car that had started in the Brookside area. Police say they learned that the driver of the Cavalier, 21-year-old Craig Augustyniak of North East, Md., had been involved in a dispute with a male pedestrian on Bethel Court in the community of Todd Estates.
Police say that during the argument, Augustyniak drove his car directly at the victim and struck him with the vehicle. Investigators say the victim remained on the hood for a short distance before being thrown to the ground. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A relative of the victim then started chasing Augustyniak as he fled the scene, according to police.
Augustyniak has been charged with felony assault, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and failure to report an injury crash. He was later arraigned and locked up in the Howard Young Prison after failing to post $33,600 secured bail.
