SALISBURY, Md.- Salisbury police say they have arrested an 18-year-old man armed with a loaded handgun accused of planning to shoot at a school bus in response to a fight that occurred Thursday at James M. Bennett High School.
Police say that on Thursday at around 3:36 p.m., officers received intelligence information from the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office about a shooting incident that may occur. According to police, the intelligence was gathered by members of the Sheriff's Office following the arrests of nine teenage students charged in connection with a Thursday morning fight at James M. Bennett High School.
Police say the information indicated that an armed suspect was planning to shoot at a school bus in the area of West Main Street as a result of the fight that occurred at Bennett.
Salisbury police conducted a surveillance of the area. They say officers observed a suspect that matched the given description. Police say that when the officers moved toward the suspect to make contact, he began to run. Police say the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Damien Maurice Height, was caught after a foot chase and was found to be in possession of a small caliber revolver type handgun.
Investigators say Height's handgun was loaded. They also say because Height is only 18 years of age, he is prohibited to be in possession of a regulated firearm. He is being held in the Wicomico County Detention Center. Bond information was not immediately known.
