BRIDGEVILLE, Del. (AP)- A team from Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey has been declared the winner of the annual Punkin Chunkin competition.
The "Big 10 Inch Team" was the only one to break the 4,000-foot mark this year. Their pumpkin traveled 4,162 feet during the contest held in a field east of Bridgeville, Del., over the weekend.
World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association President John Huber said roughly 70,000 people watched the competition at the Wheatley Farm.
The runner-up this year was Old Glory, whose pumpkin sailed 3,939 feet before smashing into the dirt.
Chunkin organizers created a tailgating section this year for revelers to eat, drink and hang out together before the shooting began.
Huber says the event will be featured on The Science Channel on Thanksgiving.
