DOVER, Del. (WBOC/AP)- Emergency officials say flooding forced dozens of people out of their homes in southern Delaware overnight as the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida battered the Delmarva peninsula.

Sussex County emergency operations center spokeswoman Debbie Jones said Friday morning that 57 people were moved from their homes overnight, most of them in the Oak Orchard and Long Neck areas. She says most people found relatives or friends to stay with.

Jones says state Route 1 is closed between Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach after water broke through the dunes and washed over the road.

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell declared a state of emergency for Kent and Sussex counties on Thursday. And on Friday morning, Markell visited Sussex County to view the storm damage.

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley ordered the partial activation of the state's emergency operations center Thursday.
