LEWES, Del.- Delaware State Police are investigating a single-car crash near Lewes that killed a 19-year-old man and left his brother injured.
Police say the crash occurred at 8 p.m. Thursday, when Shane C. Zinser of Rehoboth Beach was operating a 1998 Lincoln Continental eastbound on Route 9, about two miles west of Lewes. Troopers say that for unknown reasons the Lincoln crossed into the oncoming lane and exited the north edge of the roadway. The car struck a fence and a section of the fence broke through the front windshield of the car and struck Zinser in the head. The car swerved back on Route 9 and drove off the south of the roadway before coming to rest.
Zinser was pronounced dead at the scene. His brother, 19-year-old Evan Zinser, also of Rehoboth Beach, was taken to Beebe Hospital in Lewes. He was listed in serious condition.
Police say Shane Zinser was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash; however, Evan Zinser was wearing one. Troopers say it is unknown if alcohol or speed played a role in the crash.
The investigation is still ongoing.
