DORCHESTER COUNTY, Md.-  High tides and wind caused flooding on Hooper's Island. Emergency management reported tides more than 2 feet higher than normal. Some people on the island say this kind of weather does not really bother them.

"This is just a normal nor'east tide that we get, said waterman Marcus Flowers. "It has been a little bit more wind than we normally get for three straight days but it is not bad. People are still traveling on the roads."

The Hooper's Island native said most people on the island are used to the high tides. He said this week's weather is nothing compared to past storms. The volunteer firefighter said that during Hurricane Isabel, people could not drive on the roads.

"It was probably to my waist. We road jet skis from one end of the island to the other end of the island checking on people, making sure everyone was all right," Flowers said.

Flowers said since then some folks have raised their homes to adjust to the rising waters. But one Baltimore native said he has never seen weather like this. The retired corrections officer said he wanted water front property but not from flooding.

Most natives say you just get used to the high tides. But some people say it could take awhile.

Emergency officials say there were no road closures or evacuations in Dorchester County on Thursday or Friday. Some students who live on the island did not have to go to school because of concerns about the high tides.
