CLAYMONT, Del.- Delaware State Police say a Claymont man with seven DUI convictions has been charged with his eighth DUI.
Police say that at 12:45 a.m., Monday, Nov. 16, a trooper stopped a Jeep Cherokee on Philadelphia Pike at Commonwealth Avenue in Claymont for a registration violation.
Investigators say several observations were made which led the trooper to believe that the driver, identified as 53-year-old Gary Duchemin, was impaired and a DUI investigation ensued. At the completion of the field sobriety tests, Duchemin was arrested for DUI and transported back to Troop 1 for processing.
Police say that once at Troop 1, a routine computer check revealed Duchemin had seven previous convictions for DUI and this would be his eighth offense. He was subsequently charged with DUI after four previous convictions (felony), operation of an unregistered motor vehicle, fictitious registration, failure to have insurance and driving while suspended.
Duchemin was ordered held at the Howard Young Correctional Institute in lieu of $2,100 cash bail.
