LEWES, Del.- Delaware State Police have identified a 72-year-old Lewes woman killed in a Monday morning crash.
The victim has been identified as Barbara Hammond. Police say that at around 11:47 a.m. Monday, Hammond was driving a 2001 Nissan Altima southbound on Bay Farm Road, about five miles east of Millsboro. According to investigators, for reasons that are still unknown, the car drifted off the right shoulder and then went off the roadway. Police say the car continued south- traveling parallel to the roadway- before it crossed Trinity Road and struck a 4-foot cement pillar head-on.
Hammond was flown to Christiana Hospital near Newark where she later died at 2:30 p.m. Monday.
The investigation is ongoing and police say Hammond was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Alcohol is not suspected.
