NEW CHURCH, Va.- Health officials in Accomack County are hoping to trim the fat off of county residents. According to one health survey, 70 percent of adult residents are obese.
Also, 21.6 percent reported no physical activity. That comes as a surprise for some residents.
"Just because people say they stay in shape," said Shamar Decoach. "I didn't know it would be the fattest county."
Others see the large consumption of junk food in the area.
"There are a lot of fat people in Virginia," said resident Randy McCarraher. "They eat too many hamburgers and too much ice cream."
"We have a lot of low-income families," said resident Megan Evans. "You got to buy what foods you can. Usually the cheapest food is the most fattening."
Accomack County is in the process of applying for a Communities Putting Prevention to Work grant for environmental and cultural interventions. In the meantime, the Eastern Shore Child Health Coalition is offering BodyWorks classes to help families improve eating and activity habits. They advise making grocery lists for healthy meals and setting reasonable goals for families.
