CHINCOTEAGUE, Va.- The Chincoteague Town Council has laid out its proposed comprehensive plan. The proposal includes a measure allowing a boundary adjustment or annexation of its neighboring islands, Wallops and Assateague, to increase the town's economic base. Most of the land that is in the proposal is marsh.
Residents of Accomack County say it may not be a good idea. Some people say Accomack County residents would subsequently fall under double taxation. One resident said Chincoteague residents have already moved out because of finances.
"A lot of people moving off the island because of taxes," said Calvin Banks. "So it's not a good idea."
Residents who frequent Chincoteague also say they are against the idea.
"Taxes are high enough as it is," said Wallops resident Glen Payne.
At a town hall meeting, Accomack County officials said most residents were against the plan but added the Board of Supervisors would stay in communication with Chincoteague town officials.
