HURLOCK, Md.- Some students in Dorchester County are putting food on the table for their classmates in need.

Cafeteria workers at North Dorchester Middle School say they noticed more students were not getting enough to eat at school. So this year, the workers set up a "share table." This idea is teaching some students a valuable life lesson.

At lunchtime on Monday, the cafeteria workers were busy filling trays with pizza and fruit. They said they just want to make sure the students' stomachs are full as well.

"You see some kids want another milk and they can't afford it with the hard times these days," said Judy Davenport, who works in the cafeteria.

In the corner of the lunchroom sits the "Share Table." Cafeteria workers noticed a lot of food going to waste. So instead of tossing items like unopened carton of milk in the trash, students leave it on the table where kids in need can help themselves.

Some students say they use the share table when they want something extra to eat.

"A lot of people think to share so since I didn't have money, I got milk and an orange," said student Brandon Greathouse.

One mother said that because of the economy, something a "share table" really helps families in need.

"I think we all have a hard time with sharing, especially when we are young," said Michelle Jackson. "Not only does it teach kids to share, but it gives other people the opportunity to have things that they might not be able to have."

On Tuesday night, the school will hold a scavenger hunt to raise money for families in need.
