WILMINGTON, Del. (AP)- A judge has fined Sigma Alpha Mu at the University of Delaware $50,000 for hazing after a freshman died last year at an off-campus party.

The attorney general's office says the fine was imposed last week after a representative of the Delta Lambda chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu failed to appear at last week's arraignment. No one opposed the state's motion for a judgment against the chapter.

The local chapter is on suspension at the university until 2013.

Eighteen-year-old freshman Brett Griffin of Kendall Park, N.J., died of alcohol poisoning in November 2008 after authorities say he was encouraged to drink an excessive amount of liquor.
