Del. Early Head Start Program Gets $1M Grant

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP)- The New Directions Early Head Start program's waiting list is about to get a little smaller.

The program has been awarded a $1 million grant from the federal stimulus package.

About 135 pregnant women, infants, toddlers and their families are enrolled in the program, which serves boys and girls up to age 3.

The grant will allow 48 more New Castle and Kent county children and their families to participate.

Director Heidi Beck says they will also begin expanding in an areas of the two counties that aren't currently serving. She says they will be able to serve more Spanish-speaking families.

Some families receive child care at one of the program's sites and visits from staffers once a month. Other families use the home-based model and get one 90-minute visit from a staff member each week.
