NEWARK, Del. (AP)- Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, is thanking Delaware students and families for their thoughts and prayers after the death of the vice president's mother.

Jean Biden died Friday at age 92 in Wilmington surrounded by her family. She suffered a broken hip in a fall in March 2009.

On Saturday, Jill Biden delivered what she calls her first commencement speech at a major university as she spoke to University of Delaware graduates at their winter commencement.

She paused and became emotional as she spoke of "Joe's mom," thanking the crowd for their prayers.

Jill Biden earned her doctorate in education from the school in 2007. Before moving to Washington, she taught for 15 years at Delaware Technical and Community College. She now teaches in the Washington area.
