PRIMEHOOK BEACH, Del.- Help is on the way for a Delmarva community sometimes isolated by water. Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control officials said they will fix breaches in the dunes north of Prime Hook Beach in Sussex County.

The breaches are located just north and south of Fowler Beach Road at the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Residents said the breaches have caused significant flooding over the past few months.

Prime Hook Road, the only road that leads into the community, was once again flooded this weekend. Area residents like Rick Allan say the high water is an inconvenience.

"The school bus can't get in, the service people can't get in, the contractors can't get in, the mail doesn't get delivered. Nothing happens one way or the other. Can't get in, can't get out," Allan said.

And water is not just on the road. Water is also visible in many back yards. DNREC said it is in the process of getting permission from private landowners to perform work on the dunes. According to DNREC, this may be the last time the dunes will be fixed.

And residents said that means it is only a matter of time before the water rises again.

"That's an outrageous positions for any public entity to take. There is no one last time," Allan said.

The first breach north of Fowler Beach Road opened up back in 2006. Other breaches have been created since then. DNREC said work could begin in the next couple of weeks.
