Fenwick Beachgoers Miss Concession Stands

Posted: Updated:

FENWICK ISLAND, DEL. - The economy has hit the beaches, reducing services by stands.

"This summer with no vendor here it's risen to sort of an angry level of wait a minute, why isn't (anybody) out there?" asked Kim Allison.

Allison operated Kim's Beach Services for 19 years before another business outbid her. But when that newcomer folded last year, it left this summer's beachgoers in the sand. Regulars are asking for some relief.

"They won't even have a concession stand now," said Barbara Compton of New Castle.

Some beachgoers say it is much more difficult to lug around coolers on the beach. But the First State has suspended contracts with concession stands indefinitely for Fenwick Island, citing the recession's impact of revenue and difficulty with logistics. The town reportedly turned down a proposal to take over the beach accessory business.
