Now, Republican attorney Matthew Maciarello is back in the race for Wicomico County State's Attorney. He made the announcement Monday afternoon in Salisbury.
So, why the multiple changes of mind? Maciarello said that after he first entered the race last week, he was disturbed by a number of derogatory comments made by detractors of current State's Attorney Davis R. Ruark, a Democrat. As a result, Maciarello dropped out of the race, albeit temporarily. He explained, "We care about what that profession looks like and I felt like I brought that on by entering the race.
"I was embarrassed, ashamed, and I'm sorry, that's just how I feel," Maciarello said. "When you're bringing a bad light on the legal profession, it just did not sit with me well. And I'm sorry, I'm not a politician. That's just how I decided to handle it."
Ruark, who has filed for re-election, said he had things other than politics to worry about.
"I have a lot of work I need to do within the office," he said. "We have a tremendous number of serious, serious criminal cases that need to be prosecuted. So my focus is going to have to be on my people, the work for me, on my office, and just making sure those cases are professionally handled and that justice is done."
Ruark faces another challenger, Democratic attorney W. Seth Mitchell, in the primaries.
