Wayne Short said he depends on 8-year-old Hillary the iguana to help him with his disability.
OCEAN CITY, Md.- An Ocean City man--whose pet iguana was banned by the town a few weeks ago--has registered the lizard as a "service animal."
Wayne Short said he depends on 8-year-old Hillary the iguana to help him with his disability. However, Short will not disclose what his disability is and how the lizard helps him.
"You know it's like a cat," he said. "You put a cat on your lap and you pet it. It makes you feel good. There's a whole range of disabilities that allows you to do this."
Short registered his iguana with the National Service Animal Registry. On the company's website, it says that service animals cannot be discriminated against, according to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
However, the company said it does not require owners of the animals to disclose their specific disability, and a registration payment is required.
Ocean City police say they are reviewing the validity of the animal's registration.
