WILMINGTON, Del.- Authorities say a 24-year-old man has pleaded guilty to killing a woman by slashing her throat after breaking into her Wilmington apartment last year.

Pernell Stroman of Wilmington pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony in the slaying of 23-year-old Julie Gricol. He faces the mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced on Nov. 15.

"Nothing can change the fact that Julie Gricol was taken senselessly and brutally from her family," Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden said in a statement.  "That is why her killer will spend the rest of his life behind bars."

Gricol was found by friends on June 11, 2009, lying unconscious in the bed of her apartment after suffering a laceration to her neck.

After Stroman was arrested driving Gricol's car, he wrote a letter to Gricol's family admitting he had killed her.
