Md. Hospitals Improve Safety Standards

Posted:

SALISBURY, Md. - The advent of new technology has brought improving safety standards at Maryland's hospitals.

The state's Patient Safety Center report highlights 33 hospitals that increased their median safety over the last decade. Hospitals, including Peninsula Regional Medical Center, are doing a better job at keeping track of patient records and preventing complications caused by improperly doled-out medications.

For example, Peninsula Regional Medical Center's "Rosie the Robot" uses barcodes to stock up and "hand out" drugs in the pharmacy.

"We then have technology that allows scanning between barcoded medication," elaborated Timothy Feist, who oversees performance improvement at the hospital, "The patient is wearing a barcoded ID band, and the staff member providing the medication administration has that barcode."

All three have to match for the medication to be administered.

Hospital staff is working on eliminating human error, but the hospital continues to invest in new methodologies and streamlining of procedures.

"Until you reach zero errors and 100% perfection, you can never be settled," Feist said.

Two million doses of medication are handed out annually at PRMC.
