DELMAR, Md.- Authorities say several students had to be taken to the hospital after the school bus they were on board was rear-ended Monday afternoon near Delmar Elementary School.
The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office says the accident happened around 3:30 p.m., when a bus carrying students was stopped at the intersection of North Second Street and Foskey Lane.
According to police, while the bus was stille stopped, a vehicle directly behind it rear-ended it, resulting in what investigators described as a "low-speed collision."
Five students on board the bus were taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury for treatment of minor injuries, according to authorities.
Police say an investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle stepped on the gas pedal, after incorrectly thinking that the bus was accelerating, when in fact it was still stopped.
There is no word yet on whether any charges will be filed in connection with the crash.
