SALISBURY- One man found out first-hand why zoo animals are caged.

Salisbury Zoo Director Jim Rapp said the man jumped the visitor's fence and walked right up to the jaguar's cage. Rapp said that is when the big South American cat took a swipe at the visitor's hand, and got a piece of his finger.

Rapp said most of their visitors stay behind the barriers, but there are occasions when somebody does not.

"Every now and then I think a visitor decides to take it upon themselves to play zookeeper or gets too close to an animal," Rapp said. "And these animals do have teeth and claws and will protect themselves."

This was the first attack by a big cat at the Salisbury Zoo in almost 20 years.
