BERLIN (WBOC/AP)- Nobody was hurt after a gas line exploded in Berlin Sunday night.

Firefighters say it happened at around 7:30 p.m, when a utility crew was trying to fix a pole knocked down in this weekend's storm. During repairs, the crew hit a gas line, which in turn caused an explosion.

"At first we thought it was Perdue, that something had happened over at the plant," she said. "But when we came out we saw the fire just shooting up into the sky."

The fire took nearly two hours to control and brought in firefighters from Berlin, Ocean Pines and Ocean City. Parts of Route 818 were shut down. Only about a block on Route 346 near Union Station remains closed.

Officials with Eastern Shore Gas say about 5 homes and businesses do not have gas.  They are giving out temporary tanks to those people.

A Comcast spokeswoman says the explosion knocked out a main Comcast line for cable TV service in Fenwick Island, Del. Internet service was also affected for Delaware Comcast customers.
