MILTON- The University of Delaware is experimenting with solar energy in chicken houses.

The university is working with three companies to test the economics of using solar panels to provide electricity. The goal is to lower the expense for growers with chicken houses.

Poultry farmer Wesley Betts of Milton said cutting cost is always a priority.

"It depends on the initial cost of the program," he said. "Maybe the electric bills will go down and you still have to pay for the equipment. You've got to see what costs more and what costs less."

The pilot project will last for several years and cost about $500,000.
