Bayhealth Nurse Goes Green

DOVER, Del. - One unit at Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover is doing its part in helping the environment. It would not have happened without a nurse who was inspired to "Go Green."

Recycling is somewhat a passion for nurse Barbara Willmore.

"It's sinful how much stuff gets thrown away and it's just piling up and piling up," she said.

But it was not an option at her job. So, the Bayhealth nurse decided to start her own recycling program in her medical and surgical unit.

"A little bit helps a lot, and as much as we go through in this unit, we'll accumulate a lot of cans," said nurse Erica Jaeger.

It is just a couple of marked bins in the breakroom and kitchen, but the idea is catching on. In three weeks, Willmore already has five bags filled with bottles, cans and other recyclable materials.

"Those five bags of trash are five bags that aren't going to sit in a dump that someone isn't actually going to have to pick up and carry outside or even the gasoline it'll save, even pennies," Willmore explained.

She says she will deliver the items to recycling facilities in the area to earn cash back. The extra money will be donated to a local charity. She knows it is just a small gesture.

"It's about tomrrow and what we can do today to make it better," she said.

And she is trying to do just that, one can at a time.
