EDEN, Md.- Maryland State Police have identified the driver of a tanker truck killed after his vehicle went off the road and struck a tree on U.S. Route 13 south of Allen Road near Princess Anne on Wednesday morning.

Police say an investigation revealed that at around 6:45 a.m., the victim, identified as 59-year-old Thomas Chandler Northam of Parksley, Va., was traveling southbound on Route 13 in a 1998 Peterbilt truck transporting a tanker filled with 8,800 gallons of gasoline when his vehicle left the east side of the roadway, went into the median and struck a tree.

Northam was pronounced dead at the scene by the state medical examiner.

Police told WBOC that a small amount of gasoline spilled out of the tanker as a result of the crash. Both sides of Route 13 south of Allen Road were closed for several hours while Hazmat and fire officials cleaned up the spill and cleared the wreckage.

Police say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
