CAMBRIDGE, Md. (WBOC/AP)- Delaware Sen. Robert L. Venables, D-Laurel, and a friend were taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore following a boating accident that occurred late Friday morning in Dorchester County.

The accident occurred at around 11 a.m. in the waters near Ragged Point, according to Senate Assistant Bonnie Wood. She said that the 77-year-old senator and his friend were on a small fishing boat when they hit a buoy that knocked them both down in the boat. Neither man fell in the water.

Wood said Venables sustained a cut over his eye and sore ribs as the result of the accident. She said the senator was coherent and able to drive the boat to shore for help.

Venables could be released Friday and she said his friend was sitting up talking, despite going in and out of consciousness earlier.
