LAUREL, Del.- A Laurel School Board member is accused of interfering with the school district's hiring process.
The Delaware Office of Auditor of Accounts said Monday that back in the summer of 2003, Jerry White pushed district officials into hiring his daughter for a position as a school nurse at Dunbar Elementary School.
After the position went to another candidate, White is said to have intimidated district officials into changing their minds and hiring White's daughter instead. The Office of Auditor of Accounts says it learned about the incident after it received an anonymous complaint. It turned over the findings of its investigation to the state ethics board, known as the Delaware Public Integrity Commission. The commission then looked into the matter and issued a formal censure of White's conduct. It is also pushing for criminal prosecution.
The school board is now speaking out. As the case now moves to the Delaware Attorney General's Office for potential prosecution, the Laurel School Board released the following statement:
"The Board and Administration of the Laurel School District will fully cooperate with any request it receives from the Attorney General's Office for information related to the substance of these matters."
The Attorney General's Office has neither denied or confirmed that an investigation into White's conduct is ongoing.
