DOVER, Del.- The city of Harrington's former finance director will spend four years in prison followed by one year of work release after pleading guilty in the embezzlement of more than $800,000 from the city.
Christine H. Truitt and her codefendants- daughter Nina Grimes, and son-in-law Shaun Grimes- were also ordered by Kent County Superior Court President Judge James T. Vaughn Jr. to pay restitution of $800,034 to the city of Harrington and to have no further contact with the city.
Their sentences came after Truitt, 48, pleaded guilty Oct. 31 to theft of over $100,000 and two counts of second-degree forgery.
Vaughn heeded a prosecutor's request to go beyond sentencing guidelines- which called for up to a year in prison- in sentencing Truitt on the theft charge. He also added a year's probation for each of the forgery charges.
Nina Grimes, 27, and her husband, Shaun Grimes, 29, each had pleaded guilty to single counts of theft of over $100,000. Nina Grimes was sentenced to two years in prison and a year of work release and probation. Her husband has to serve a year in prison and a year of probation.
According to state Auditor Tom Wagner, prior to her May 3 arrest, Truitt forged 383 checks between November 2004 and April 2007. The defendants were accused of spending the money on luxury cars, trips and mortgage payments on Truitt's Farmington home.
