LINTHICUM, Md. (AP)- Special Olympics Maryland officials say President Barack Obama's joke likening his bowling skills to those of athletes with disabilities was disappointing. On "The Tonight Show" Thursday, the president told host Jay Leno he'd been practicing but wasn't happy with his score of 129, and then remarked: "It was like the Special Olympics or something." He has since apologized. Special Olympics Maryland spokeswoman Kelley Schniedwind said Friday that Obama's comment furthers stereotypes of people with intellectual disabilities. She also says the president's inference that Special Olympics athletes only get low scores is wrong. She says bowlers in the highest divisions routinely score much higher than 129. However, she says she sees this as a chance to teach people about the talents of Special Olympics athletes.
