Man Alleges Abuse, Sues Washington Archdiocese

WASHINGTON (AP)- An Arizona man who says he was abused by a priest in the 1960s, has sued the Archdiocese of Washington and one of its parishes.

George Thompson of Mesa says that as a boy, he attended St. John Baptist de la Salle in Hyattsville, Md., and was sexually abused by Monsignor R. Joseph Dooley. Dooley served as a priest at John Baptist and died in 2000.

The 59-year-old Thompson says the archdiocese should have known that the priest had a history of abusing children.

The lawsuit, filed in Delaware Superior Court, alleges that much of the abuse took place in Dooley's trailer in Rehoboth Beach, Del.

Archdiocese spokeswoman Susan Gibbs says Thompson reported the abuse in 2005 and that officials alerted police. Gibbs says the archdiocese has repeatedly offered assistance to Thompson.
