DOVER, Del. (AP)- Dover's City Council is calling on Delaware state lawmakers to apologize for the state's role in slavery.

The City Council voted 5-3 Monday night for the resolution.

Councilman Eugene B. Ruane says some might argue an apology is meaningless, but he feels a collective response to a collective injustice is needed. Councilman Kenneth L. Hogan, opposed an apology to one group, saying many others also were vicitimized.

In addition to being a slave state until the Civil War, Delaware had racially segregated schools until 1954 and discriminatory Jim Crow laws for much of the 20th century.

Six states, including Virginia and Maryland, have issued apologies as well as both houses of Congress.
