UMd. Test Aims to Make Campus Pedestrian Friendly

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP)- The University of Maryland is closing part of a main campus artery to all private cars and trucks for two months this summer.

The school is temporarily shutting Campus Drive between the M Circle to Cole Field House and Union Drive as part of a pilot plan to create a pedestrian-friendly campus center.

Only pedestrians, bicyclists, campus shuttles, Metrobuses and emergency, construction, delivery and university service vehicles will be allowed from June 19 to July 16.

The road will be closed to Metrobuses and campus shuttles from July 17 to Aug. 13. Only an internal Campus Connector, paratransit and emergency, construction, delivery and maintenance vehicles will be allowed.

No private cars or trucks will be allowed on the road during the eight-week period, except for July 4.
