OCEAN CITY, Md.- The Ocean City Mayor and Council on Monday passed a new law which makes it illegal for anyone to shine a laser pointer at another person in the resort town. The law also prohibits stores from selling laser pointers to anyone under the age of 18.
The new law came about after the recent explosion in popularity of green-colored laser pointers in Ocean City. Authorities say the devices can be dangerous when shined on somebody's eyes or at emergency crews.
Under the new measure, people are not allowed to shine laser pointers on streets, bays, sidewalks or the boardwalk area.
Additionally, it is also illegal for minors to purchase or possess laser pointers within town limits.
The new law also makes it illegal for stores to sell a laser pointer without having a sign conspicuously posted at the point of sale or exchange advising potential purchasers of the town's laser pointer law. In addition, the ordinance makes it unlawful to sell a laser pointer without providing the purchaser with written notice, in bold face type, a copy of the town's laser pointer law.
The new penalties for violations of this new law make it a misdemeanor offense punishable by up to six months in jail and or a $1,000 fine.
