CAMBRIDGE, Md.- As oyster season comes to a close many Eastern Shore of Maryland watermen are gearing up for the start of crab season, which gets under way on April 1.

The season is expected to get off to a slow start since the water temperature is too cold.

"If you get a nice warm shot things can get going, but it's all up to Mother Nature right now," said Bunky Chance, a Talbot County waterman.

Many watermen say newly imposed sanctuaries, limited resources and rising fuel prices have made oyster season difficult. They are hoping the crab season is different.

"The price of everything else is going up, along with fuel- except for the price of our own product- so it squeezes you that much tighter," Chance said.

Some watermen say they will not start catching crabs until the beginning of May.
