OCEAN CITY, Md. - Public works crews in Ocean City are preparing for the possibility of large numbers of dead fish washing ashore.

Beach Patrol Capt. Butch Arbin said lifeguards first spotted dozens of dead Menhaden off the coast on Sunday. However, Arbin said only small numbers were spotted on the beach.

At last check, Arbin said the fish were seen between 70th Street and the Delaware state line. The tides likely carried the fish south and will continue to do so, the captain said.

Lifeguards said the biggest threat would likely be around midnight when high tide arrives.

Arbin said the swarms of dead fish are the same batch that caused a mess in Rehoboth Beach on Saturday.

Rehoboth Beach Patrol Capt. Kent Buckson said city cleaning crews collected roughly 500 of the dead fish on Saturday. Buckson said many of the fish had their heads cut off, creating a health risk.

Buckson guessed the fish came from a commercial vessel but their exact source is unclear.

Not only did the batch smell, lifeguards worried children could get sick by touching the fish.
