USA Today, CDS Release Preseason Honors for Wesley

DOVER, Del. - USA Today rated Wesley College third in its Division III Preseason Top 25, while four Wolverines were chosen as Preseason All-Americans by Consensus Draft Services.

In the 2011 College Football Special Edition, available on newstands now, Wesley ranked third behind Wisconsin-Whitewater and Mount Union, respectively.

CDS, meanwhile, placed three Wolverines on its first team defense.  Senior defensive end Chris Mayes (Waldorf, Md./Westlake), senior defensive tackle Paul Gilstrop (Lindenwold, N.J./Paul VI) and senior linebacker Mike Asiedu (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton).  Offensive tackle James Buettner (Dundalk, Md./Patapsco), also a senior, was picked to the second team.

With four selections, Wesley had more than any other Division III school.

In 2010, Mayes notched 17.5 sacks and 32.5 tackles for loss in 13 games to go along with 45 solo tackles and three forced fumbles.  Asiedu made 78 stops, batted down 10 passes and had 10.5 tackles for loss.  Gilstrop made over 60 tackles, including 11.5 for loss.  Buettner was instrumental on the offensive side of the ball, blocking for a unit that produced a 1,000-yard rusher, a 1,000-yard receiver and allowed just 1.15 sacks per game.

Among teams on Wesley's 2011 schedule, Division III rival Salisbury ranked 25th.

Last season, Wesley advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the sixth straight year and moved on to the national semifinals for the fourth time during the run.  The Wolverines, who won the Lambert Meadowlands and ECAC Team of the Year Awards, also picked up their sixth consecutive ACFC title and ninth overall, finishing the year with a 12-1 record.

Wesley opens the 2011 season when East Texas Baptist visits Scott D. Miller Stadium on September 3.
