Arsons Under Investigation in Western Sussex

BLADES, LAUREL and DELMAR, Del.- The Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a string of arsons that occurred overnight in western Sussex County.

Authorities say the first fire occurred at around 9:12 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at a home located on the first block of West Second Street in Blades.

The Blades Fire Department, assisted by the Seaford and Laurel fire departments, responded to the scene. Upon arrival they encountered light smoke showing.

The home was not occupied at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported. Damages have been estimated at approximately $5,000. 

The second fire, which occurred at around 3:22 a.m., Friday, June 24, heavily damaged a storage building located on the 8900 block of Jackson Road in Delmar, Del.

The Delmar Fire Department, assisted by the Laurel and Hebron fire departments, responded to the scene. Upon arrival they encountered heavy fire.

No injuries were reported.  Damages have been estimated at approximately $10,000.

The third and final fire under investigation occurred at around 4:39 a.m., Friday, June 24, at a home located on the 200 block of Willow Street in Laurel.

The Laurel Fire Department, assisted by the Blades, Seaford and Delmar fire departments, responded to the scene. Upon arrival they encountered heavy fire at the rear of the structure.

The home was not occupied at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.  Damages have been estimated at approximately $60,000. 

State Fire Marshal investigators determined that all three fires were intentionally set, although investigators stopped short of saying whether they were connected to each other.
