Perdue Chicks Clinch ESBL Championship With DH Sweep Of Lugnuts

SALISBURY, Md.- The Perdue Chicks clinched the 2011 Eastern Shore Baseball League regular season championship Sunday by sweeping the Eastern Shore Lugnuts in a doubleheader by scores of 9-2 and 5-4 in Federalsburg.

It is the 10th ESBL championship in the past 17 years for Perdue.

As a result of being league champion, the Chicks secured a berth in the National Amateur Baseball Federation regional tournament that will be held in Salisbury August 4-7.

Kurt Bruce was the winning pitcher in the first game Sunday. Bruce pitched the complete game as he struck out seven and walked none. Brian Hollamon and Kevin Lindsay were the offensive stars for Perdue. Hollamon had two hits, including a 2-run homer, and drove in a total of three runs while Lindsay had three singles. The Chicks needed extra innings to win game 2 of the doubleheader.

After blowing a 2-run lead, they bounced back to scored the tying run in the seventh and the winning run in the eighth. Bryan Bloch picked up his third win on the season in relief of starter JR Dobson. Tyler Riley led the offense in the second game with three hits , including two doubles and three RBI. Mike Celenza added two hits as well.

Up next for Perdue is a Tuesday night game against Creighton Trailers at 7:30 p.m. at the Henry Parker Athletic Complex in Salisbury.
