DOVER, Del.- A new report from the Delaware Housing Coalition shows fair market rent in Delaware has fallen slightly over the past year. Still, the average rent in some parts of the state is over $1,000. Officials at the housing coalition have said there's not enough affordable housing in the first state.
According to the coalition, there is an immediate need for more than 13,000 affordable rental units.
The Delaware Housing Coalition said the fair market rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Sussex County is $750. In Kent it's $812 and in New Castle County the fair market rent is $1,077.
Despite a drop in home prices, Delaware's housing market has sustained higher rent prices. Renters who spoke with this reporter said they cannot afford to buy a home, so renting is their only option.
"I'd say reasonable rent would be between $400 and $500," said Ralph Johnson of Dover.
