OCEAN CITY, Md.- Police in Ocean City say they are looking into purchasing a device that will measure the engine size in rental scooters and mopeds. Police say they suspect the internal combustion chamber sizes in many of these engines is more than the legal limit of 50 cc's.
"We're exploring getting a device that will allow us to accurately measure the engine size of the mopeds and scooters that are currently available in Ocean City," said Mike Levy, public information officer with the Ocean City Police Department.
As of Thursday morning, police say there had been 105 scooter accidents in the resort town in 2011, already more than 91 scooter accidents in 2010.
"By bringing them into compliance with Maryland law, it will reduce the number of accidents that probably could have been avoided," Levy said.
The Ocean City Mayor and Council approved funding for OCPD to invest in an engine calibration device.
