SALISBURY, Md. - Portions of Wicomico County near the Nanticoke and Wicomico rivers, along with parts of Salisbury, must be evacuated starting Friday morning, County Executive Richard M. Pollitt Jr. ordered Friday.

The approach of Hurricane Irene, bringing high winds, heavy rain and the potential of flooding up to five feet, necessitates the evacuation, Pollitt said in a press release.

Jim Fineran, public information officer for the county, said Friday that the evacuations could not termed mandatory. "We are not in the position to force people out of their residences," Fineran said.

However, he urged residents to follow the evacuation order, given the potential for danger presented by Hurricane Irene.

The evacuation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, with the goal of completion by 4 p.m. Saturday. Areas to be evacuated are:
