CAMBRIDGE, Md. (WBOC/AP)- The Shore Health System says it is evacuating Dorchester General Hospital due to wind and water damage from Hurricane Irene.

Spokeswoman Linda Mastro says about 17 patients were being transferred by ambulance Sunday to Memorial Hospital in Easton.

She says about a dozen other patients have been discharged.

Mastro says the decision to close the 38-bed hospital stems from serious damage overnight to the laboratory roof. She says the operating rooms, central supply, some patient rooms and the chemotherapy unit also sustained damage.

Mastro says she expects the hospital to reopen in two to three days.

Anyone who would normally go to Dorchester General for medical attention is advised to call 9-1-1.
