RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Gov. Bob McDonnell is opposing an oath that voters in Virginia's March presidential Republican primary election have to sign to cast ballots.

The oath binds a primary voter to support the eventual GOP nominee for president in November.

McDonnell said in a Thursday morning press release there is no way to enforce the oath on a voter in the privacy of a ballot box.

He also says it's not good for the Republican Party because it would have the effect of diminishing participation in the primary.

McDonnell urged the party's State Central Committee to rescind the oath.

The Republican governor is sometimes mentioned as a GOP vice presidential prospect.
